thats what i thought also . i'll give it a try . hey i posted a few weeks ago on f.i fourum and got no response , i am putting the 1.8 ltr from my 72 bus in the 77 i bought . it came with all the fuel inj. stuff . can i retro fit this on the 1.8 . will it cause any problems since it was designed for a 2.0 ? i'm sure this will be easier when i have the engine out . if i stay with the the weber carb i have on it now , will it create any problems with any other functions that may be computer controlled ? or is the computer only for f.i use ?

samcat,i`m not real clear on what you`re saying here. You have a 1.8L with carb that you want to install into a 77 with FI and remain a carbed engine?
If so no problem. The FI system has a full loop fuel system to maintain pressure throughout ensuring injector pressure. Just run a fuel line from the tank to the pump enroute to the carb. Forget the return line just block it off where it returns to the tank. If you have the factory manual pump on the engine now then you can use it and forget the elect aftermarket pump and regulator. All will be straight forward swapping. Do`nt attempt to convert the 1800 to FI there is no head temp sensor most likely. Good luck. Bob Ingman

I'd just switch flywheels as you suggested...have donne it to put a 2 liter in a 74 and would figure on doing it to put the 1.8 in the 77...as far as the FI stuf....reallly don't know...the valves on the 1.8 are much larger...really not sure what the FI computer would do. Grab a pair of used weber 40's

i was going to leave the engine attached to the tranny and put in as a unit . doing some checking i found that the later trans is somewhat stronger so i want to use it . i'm going to switch the starter from my 72 [ it is fairly new ] to my 77 . i'll cross my fingers and hope it works . gareth did you go to high co. bus festival this past summer ? i had a blast there .......jeff

i think i'll be ok just changing the starter on this. if i was putting a larger fly wheel in an older trans bellhousing than it would be different , but i'm doing the reverse . i just don't want to get it all switched and then have to drop it back out [ been there done that ] has for the fuel inj. idea , it would have been nice but i'll go with carbs for now ...........jeff

hey i don't want to beat a dead horse , but i would rather do this once and be done with it . i read that the later trans. bellhousing is a half inch deeper than the early one . so am i headed for trouble or is swaping the bell not that hard ?

Scatcat swapping the bell is quick and easy. The thing to do is set it up on the bench and test run it before installation. Get the buga worked out before hand. Then the install is the easy part.
Use the same starter and bell as the enginehad before. Hook up to engine on bench. Hook up to battery and test run it. Its fun and its easy. Dont try to figure out a problem from under the car with the engine installed. Thats the hard way to approach it.
Hook battery + to big terminal on starter. Hook battery - to bell housing.
Run a jumper lead from battery+ to coil +
Hook up a fuel line from a gas can to fuel pump(if elect pump feed off coil +)
Using a remote starter connect Big terminal of starter(battery +) to small push on fitting on sylinoid and on contact the engine will crank. When you have reached that point connect battery + to coil + and crank again to start engine. When the bugs are worked out hook it up to car and go.
Yes do install engine and trans as a unit. Good luck. Bob Ingman
