1776 with stock carb

Post by Andreas Mann »

Hi,
I´m building a 1776 engine for my ´70 Westfalia-bus. Because I have a gasheater installed, I can´t use Dualcarbs, because of the little room in the back. So I must use the stock 34-Pict. Does anyone have some experience with that combination?

Thanks

I would try the Progresive carb set up from Webber. I had it in a 1835 that worked great 'till my reduction gears toasted the motor. In any case I had no prblems at all w/ the carb, and it doesn't take up too much room. Why go w/ a stock carb on a beefed up power plant. If you want performance get a Webber, they're reliable too.

Thanks for your comment!
I want to , no I must use the stock carb because of an institution called "TUEV" in Germany. They check your car. And if something wrong you pass the test. Or you can make that changes legal if you also change the brakes,... and so on. And you have to pay more taxes for the more on ccm and horsepower. So I want an engine which look like a stocker.

The 34PICT3 carburetor was actually too small for a 1600cc engine. It will be much too small for a 1776. Since the venturi is fixed there isn't much you can do to make it work really well.

If you could fabricate an intake manifold for a single Kadron you might be able to get the 1776 running pretty well and it would look fairly stock unless the technician really knows what to look for.

If you have to use stock, have heard of people resizing the jets in them to make them work better, plus less restrictive air cleaners although stock is best for keeping carb clean.
A friend that owned a engine rebuild shop then went to work for Roger Mears showed me the bits he used to open the jets up.

good luck

Hi. I'm running a 34 pict-3 in my 70 bus. It's an 1835cc, and it runs very stong and smooth. I installed a 65 idle jet, with a 140 main jet. I have a 009 with a compufire module. New stock heads and a 4 tip Monza exhaust. This set up has worked great for me and is very simple to maintain.
For a while I had dual Kadrons on it. It also ran great. The only thing that I had to do to make the Kadrons fit was to remove the air filter stand. It kinda hurt me to do that, but the engine compartment looked great once the engine was installed !. My city mileage was 24, and highway 30 mpg. My case had cracked, so when I changed the block, I went back to the 34pict carb because I'll be using those carbs for a type 4 project.
Either way it has been great for me. Kadrons have the bad rap for their tuneability. That has some merit to it. But what I did was to purchase a linkage kit from Bug Pack. It didn't work, but I used the ends of the linkages and adapted those to my old linkage and made it work fine.

Good luck to you,

Eddie

34 pict venturi can easily be removed and bored to 28-29mm. the difference is noticeable. i' ve used on many 1776 and also a 1915 with an engle 110.

The 34PICT-3 is a decent carb if properly tuned.

The throttle plate can take a hole in it to help off idle hesitation and the jets bored or swapped out with Mikuni units.

1776 is no problem for the 34.

Go with duals...Forget the 34 pict..I had an engine go from 25 to 9 MPG with a carb swap from duals to a 34 pict...this happened opn more than just one engine...The stock carb is good for a stock engine, and a weber progressive was created to be a torture device for tuners...YUCK! LOL

I've used the pict34 on 1915's with success. It does require rejetting, and the 1915 was with stock cam & heads. The thing had the power that the beetle should have cam with stock, it wasn't FAST but you had the power to past people on the freeway when needed. I am now couriouse about what punching out the ventury would have done. The motor looked completely stock even had stock exhaust, past emmissions. No complaints from the cars owner.
