I'm interested in doing this swap for my wife's vanagon. She has seen me get 220HP from 2.0 type 4 in my 914 race car and surprised me this AM with a request for more power from her waterboxer.
I'm thinking suburu because I She doesnt want a hot rod, just more torque. I don't know much about the waterboxer and can't learn much about modifying it anywhere.
Any info re wboxer or conversion would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Gordon

The most popular conversion for the Waterboxer now is the tiico.com swap to the 2.0 L I4 "Golf" engine from South Africa, where they have made same van with this engine until this month. The kit provides about 118 hp or 30%+ increase, and also better mileage, and especially better durability. Comes complete with new engine, harness, new Motronic MP9 FI system (re-use the Vanagon injectors) and ignition system all hoses, etc - all ready to bolt on. Looks very "factory" and can be done in a weekend. I just got one to swap in my wife's 91 van - mainly for durabilty, and the kit looks great. Check their web page for user comments, and search the Vanagon.com mailing list archive for stories from this and other conversions.

I think the best is still the suby, it is a pancake motor and you don't have to lift the deck. Check out kennedy eng. He has every part for the 90- 94 legacy 2.2 conversion, and even the wiring instructions. He will send you the conversion instructions to you, so you can read them before you make any purchases, if you call and ask for them. I came within inches of doing this to my 80 Vanagon but decided to stay aircooled.
