shift linkage

i have an 84 van and a shift linkage problem.
1st to 2nd gear requires downward pressure on the shifter to locate. this postion is very hard to find.any ideas for adjustment or worn parts to address????????????

sounds like you have some worn out parts, check underneath, on my 80 all the linkage is visible except the one bushing above the gas tank,
