my 80 vanagon seems to be sucking gas badly and it was suggested by a person who had the same problem and someone fixed it for him by popping the top off the air meter box and readjusting it has anyone heard of this or done this? by the way is a 2 liter aircooled also anyone done any turbocharging on a vanagon with a 2 liter aircooled?

hmm thanx i will check it it started acting goofy a while back then i got my s-10 and parked the van but now i need to do some front end work to the s-10 and started to drive the van again <no pun intended> i changed out the coil cause the old one was overheating i just put in a pertronix electronic ignition in the distributor that helped the economy a little at least the timing does not bounce all over when i set it but now that you mention the cht maybe thats why when its cold it idles like its supposed to wel a little lower than its supposed to and when it warms up it seems to want to idle at around 1500 to 2000 rpm by the way this is not a california model so there is no o2 sensor anyways thanx for the info <and sorry for the punctuation>

80 vanagon has the octagon exhaust ports( well they aint round )
if the van ran okay before I wouldnt pop the top on the AFM, there have been alot of post in 8 months on tweaking the AFM. I would look for vacuum leaks, check the head temp sensor,

If it was running fine...popping off the top of the AFM and re-adjusting would be the last thing I would do. Gotta ask....if it was running fine...what stopped working and why do you need to re-adjust. The most likely cause it a vacume leak. It would dump vacume and cause the fuel pressure regulator to give full time enrichment. Dirty wiring connectors at the injectors, throttle valve switch or almost any key component can cause this. Poor ignition can cause this. As the previous post listed, a weak or faulty CHT could easily cause this. Most likely culprit ...if all else used to be fine...is the fuel pressure regulator having either a vacume leak in its hose, a bad diaphram...or even a sticky throttle plate. Anything that causes partial throttle opening or altered vacume signature will cause the regulator to enrich your fuel. Ray
