?? about Front End Shroud...

Need more help friend:
There is a metal shroud under my nose. I crept under today to find out it was being held on with 3 screws...looks like it should be about double that many. Being that it was filthy, a bit rusty, and that I had no idea what was behind it, I decided to take it off. Duh, clutch cable, brake pedal, steering box linkage, parking brake cables, accelerator cable, tah dah!
My question is:
I want to clean this piece up and go hunt for some new screws. Is it dangerous to drive the bus without the shroud in place? Obviously it must serve some purpose, but just wondered how vital a piece this is. FYI: My driving is very light city driving in short jaunts. No more than 2 miles at any given time. Also, it is very nasty under there and I would like to clean it up (even though no one looks there but me). Could I drive her to a car wash and use the power sprayer set on the degreaser setting? My Muir book says to have your undercarriage steam cleaned, but I reckon that is what folks do up in Yankee land where salt is used on the roads. I've never heard of steamcleaning your car in Texas. Any help on my restore is appreciated.
