Fuel Pump
If you get one from E-bay or anywhere where you cannot return it, make sure its new. Used ones are fine...but you need to put a little very light oil in it plus some gas maybe and test run it. You want to make sure the rollers are not too rattley and that it gets good rpm. Without fuel in it, it should be a very high rpm...probably close to 2000 rpm...or else it will have a slow build problem which could be hard starting. I just took one out of my car that was 6 Mos. old out of the box...it was slow! It was also very N.O.S. It could have been on the shelf for years....and even sealed...it could have sustained some sort of damage. I will disect it one of these nights....but I would bet it was dropped and has a cracked armature or bearing cup on the motor. Ray

Fuel Pump
Hi guys now that im getting closer to getting my bus running I just wanted to ask u guys were the fuel pump relay is located because I was checking out my fuel pump and the posative to the fuel pump is hooked right up to the coil. My bus is a 77 and I pritty sure it should be hooked up to the fuel pump relay. Also when I bought the bus the guy said the fuel pump was bad and the new OE ones are really exspensive is there anyway I can use one of the fuel pumps u see in vw mags for like 24 bucks.
Thank You in advance for the help,
Chris.

The $24 buck pumps will not do. They put out very low pressure and volume. About 1/10 of what is required. These pumps last a long time. There are any number of them om L-type vehicles in the junkyards that will probably work fine. The fuel pump should be getting its power from the relay. The relay was probably what was bad...and not the pump...hence the reason the relay was bypassed. Its an easy to get relay out of the junkyard...or not that expensive new. Ray

lowpro,
ray is right. if there is one thing he knows about, it is the FI system. the only way it will work correctly is with the original components, and as ray says, they are available new, or used. there are quite a few vehicles which use the same bosch parts, so they do not need to be from a vw van. there is a bosch FI parts interchage list on type2.com:

o.k. i just checked on ebay, and found one, i have purchased from this seller, too. some people hate ebay, i'm not one of them. there are some pumps there right now, too. search for "bosch pump" and you'll find a few to choose from. and ray is right about going the the wrecker, but there are not always good wreckers near by.

i have seen the pumps new on ebay for less than 50 bucks, especially if they are listed as fitting another type of vehicle that is less common than a vw van, like a fiat or something. check to parts interchange.
if you need a wiring diagram to sort out the pump wiring, there are also some on type2.com.

Fuel Pump
Hey guys I took out my fuel pump the other day to look at it and to see what would happen when I would hook it up to a battery and when I hooked it up and it did nothing at all and the wires kept sparking alot when I conected them to the battery so I know its a bad pump. I was looking at it and also found out that its not even the right kind of pump in the first place. So im going to try to find one off a bus at a junk yard. I just wanted to let you guys know whats goin on and I also wanted to ask a question. When I look in vw mags I see the fuel pump for 75-79 and I was wondering if the ones off a 72-74 would work?
Thanx Guys,
Chris.

I think the fuel pumps from a '72 to '74 type 2 were mechanical and for carbs
if you have a FI motor you need the electric pump
good luck

Check around, these pumps are pretty common on a lot of German vehicles with L-jet. I would bet you could get a couple of used ones for about 10 bucks ea. Ray
