They are Type4 (EA142) proto types built in 1966. The front end was used on the typ4 two years later.
Btw. This info came from "Volkswagen Model Documentation" by "Joachim Kuch" published by Bentley

Those are indeed the prototypes of what became the VW 411. The styling of the prototypes are definitely cool, too bad we never got one. Image

These cars, and lots more beside, are on display at the VW museum in Wolfsburg. If you visit, but don't speak German, (like me), fear not!. There is a recorded information service available in English as you walk around the exhibits. It's well worth a visit.

Hello

The silver car has the fueltank under the rear seat and the additional gas heater up front. AFIK they had been equipedwith a 1300 CC type 4 yet also 6 cyl 1,8 where in testing.
The sedans didn´t made production due the costs and the snappier handling ( remember Nader ? ). Yet also a convertible was build on a tree box design 411.

This is a very cool car...and I thought I liked my two door 412. It kind of reminds me of the NSU K-70?...But then again...all of the type 4 family was really NSU anyway. Ray

I'm sure the K70 was VW watercoole and front engined. It actually looked more like the Derby than the typ4. I've got some engine repair literature on it somewhere. It was ohc as I recall.

Yes the k-70 was watercooled, but shared a whole lot of chassis construction technology and some gear box and electrical technology. After crawling around in some early Audi equipment...I have seen just how "audi-esque" the type 4 series was....which makes sense seeing as how they are an NSU product anyway. Ray

Hello

Type 41-46 is the VW type 4
Type 47 is the 914
Type 48 is the K 70

Now the K70 was the small brother from the Ro 80 and when it hit the road a very modern design yet to much was to far ahead and to expensive and VW needed from 1967 to 1969 to achive the VW standards. The car was never really loved by Volkswagen but many parts and details where taken over to Volkswagens new WC cars. The engine was to expensive to produce and they only allowed the 100 HP version while NSU had a 120 HP EFI ready in the box. The K 70 was mostly bought by NSU fans and people who liked to drive fast.
Audi pushed the 80 GTE to replace the K70 and take over the costumers.

The K70 had the Problem to sit between the Audi 100 and the 412. The 412 costumer didn´t think about a WC car while the K70 costumer where torn between the Audi and the NSU. The Audi had the better Status ( little Mercedes ) and was a more solid car yet for the Audi Baseprice was a full loaded K70 aviable. But the Audi Costumer didn´t like the sporty handling and the rev happy engine and for other brands like Opel or Ford the car was to modern and expensive. BMW costumer was a goal as well as Renault 16 or Fiat 124/131. The car even captured on the Alfa Romeo marked.

Not many cars survived as the sporty handling was welcomed by the secound hand buyers plus many VW dealers didn´t like to service the cars like they should. Also many cars rottet by rust and the engines where searched to fiddle them into the NSU Prinz ( TT ). With some major shoehorning and slight tuning they managed 180 HP in a 600 kg Car.

Yet the braking point wher the axle studs and the rear drums not allowing drag races but those cars had been King of the hill in the modified class racing nearly as fast as Porsche racecars.

Guys this is the root from the VW GTi´s

But don´t forget that VW also rallied there cars and the 411 ( with a slight tuned 68 HP engine ) finished first in his class in Monte Carlo ( I think 14th overall ). The Porsche Salzburg beetles where kings in there class untill the competition had not only more power ( mostly 50% over them ) yet also 4 wheel disc brakes.

But those cars where never really supportet by VW and those wimps allways feaerd to much power ( or Ralph Nader ? )
