I'm in the mist of rebuilding a type 4 to put into a ghia.
In my spare time I've been reading joe Cali's conversion manual. I'm hung up right now on the thermostat.
I'm not sure where the plate you have to make mounts on the engine. Any one have any actual pictures or videos them doing their Cali conversion.
The technical drawer are good, but actual pictures or videos would be nice also

Re: Type 4 Cali conversion
I’ve not done this myself yet but will be working on a similar build later this year.
This from my collection of internet screenshots so not my work.

Re: Type 4 Cali conversion
Thanks so much for the reply and taking the time to post the pictures. But the problem I was having is I don't know where exactly this bolts to the engine.
I was trying to find a picture of it mounted.
I've been searching the web. You did better than me, I couldn't even find those pictures where did you find those and did they have more pictures of their conversion?
Thanks jim

Re: Type 4 Cali conversion
The thermostat mounts in the stock type4 location. The original T4 bracket orientates the thermo so the end points at the small pulley that routes the control cable to the fanhousing. In T1 orientation it is vertical to activate the flaps via a pushrod.
So right side of the crankcase under the pushrod tubes, you’ll see the two mounting points to match the custom bracket above.

Re: Type 4 Cali conversion
I've had this engine torn apart for the last 15 tears years sitting. I finally getting around to rebuilding it. While I waiting on some parts to come back from the machine shop, I started working on making the conversion parts.
I tore the engine apart so long ago, I didn't remember where the original thermostat went. I see a place under the pushrod tubes where it would mount. I thought those threaded holes were for mounting tin hardware.
Thanks jim

This thermostat looks shot to me
It's expanded when cold

You are correct.
That t-stat is shot.
Either that, or the picture was taken in an oven...
