Rod bearings for 1700/1800?

Post by VIPERGREEN76 »

Are the rod bearings for type 4 1700/1800, the same as the rods bearings for a type 1?

Interesting question..!

Type 1 rod journal 2.1646 - 2.1654"
Type 4 1.7/8 rod journal 2.1645 - 2,1681"

Width might be different,
But some machining could take care of that, right?

Don't have any 1.7/1.8 stuff about anymore, otherwise I'd take a measurement for you.
Would be good to have some more options.

There was also the "Dodge bearing mod" from years ago you might have luck finding if you search.
IIRC, that allowed the early cranks to use some really nice Clevite bearings..
Speedier than a Fasting Bullet!

Catter
I found the answer. The 66mm crankshaft rod journals, need to be machine down to the type 1 width (0.127 inch) narrower. This will allow the use of type 1,bearings & rods. The article on the, all about vw performance engines #3,Hot VW's magazine, summer 2011. Type 4 engine build.
