Not sure what i need

Post by blue1957 »

I am building a baja and have a honda j35 for it. Im not building the motor up at all just running it stock. I have found a few 002 and 091 transaxles, But when I called a shop today to get some info I was told I need a fully built 091 @5k or spend 7500 on a mendeola 2D. I am running 33 X10.5 tires. What can I honestly get away with that will be reliable and last. I don't plan on racing it. Its just a toy.

I'm running a glass dune buggy with a 6-rib 091 bus trans and a slightly built 1776 engine. I also have a long time in building a glass buggy but have a slightly built Cologne (Ford) V6 tied up to an 091 also. It is usually the recommendation for HP and Torque engines to be tied up to the VW bus trans. I don't know much about the Mendiola 2D trans so no opinion on that.

I haven't played with the 002 so I can't help with going with the earlier trans to support the Honda J35 engine. I looked it up the Honda J35 and "Output was 200 HP (149 kW) at 6200 rpm and 24.5 kg⋅m (240 N⋅m; 177 lb⋅ft) of torque at 4600 rpms.

The nose cone of the 091 trans sits about 3" higher than the stock VW trans which means the nose cone comes in higher than the rear part of the pan's tunnel. I also have a home made body lift (shown in the pix) out of rectangular tube that I built, the commercial ones are kind of weak and are mostly for looks based on what I have seen and been told (they also can rust quickly).

There is a conversion piece for the shifter to mount on on top of the tunnel and it bolts in place. There are other things you can get also depending on what you plan on doing.

The CV's are larger and the axles needed are longer and the outer universal is a bus piece and needs to be installed vs. the stock ones.

There is also an adapter that allows the trans to be more nose down and go into the tunnel but that could change things on the engine because of the angle.

Then there is the front of the BAJA and what can be done there too.

A lot of it will depend on hwo you drive it and clutch it, some racing guys use the 2D with just a 110HP VW engine. Those guys are pin it to win it and the winner is based a lot on who keeps it floored the longest and doesn't break during the race. The 2D also handles 500HP turbo charged V8's, but either way it still has the ting reverse gear set up of the 002, 091, etc VW systems.

A lot of it will be budget, there is a 5/16 or so difference between an 002 and 091 set up...not exact number there, but pretty close. A Mendeola will have a different length as well as narrower if I remember right.

I'd be honest with how yourself how you want to drive it. Street driven with a stage 2 clutch and driven spirited you can probably get away with a good stock build on an 091. You might pocket away money here and there though as my guess is you can launch and destroy.....or your friend will when you're not looking, or hopefully it slips the clutch enough you just have to do the clutch. (Non copperhead style as that will also help synchros live)

I build and rebuilt for a guy multiple times his stock box 091 before he finally did the Weddle gears, his 4.3 GM V6 and driving style with a stage 3 he could rip out 1st at will. His dream was to ride wheelies in second on the street as well as played hard with it on the street at times riding wheelies over railroad crossing intersections. The shocks of the bumps just ripped 1st out easily, 2nd he didn't go through as much. Multiple rebuilds where done fast as his girl was coming back in country and wanted to give her a ride in it while she was here.

Any of the choices the reverse gear is the same and you will destroy instantly if trying to do anything more than lightly move in reverse. Do you try and get unstuck or worst yet play tow turck with your reverse gear. Trying to get your buddy unstuck using reverse hopefully just blows out your reverse gear and not your reverse gear and case as well. The reverse shaft bearing support isn't made for tow truck duty and one guy found out the hard way when he brought his box to me. A very nice weddle geared and steel sleeved 091 where we had to trash the steel sleeved case as how bad reverse bearing shaft area was blown out, so he saved his buddies day to be out a grand or more for a couple reverse parts and $600 for a new to him case steel sleeved and $450 labor, so maybe a little more than a grand to learn turn the thing around and use a forward gear with the buggy.

Water cooled the reverse gear is for backing off the trailer or backing up in a parking lot, stuck in the sand or pulling a lot hopefully you just destroy the reverse gear. Factory reverse gears that are long gone were nice as they were so much softer and destroyed easier, the aftermarket gears last longer but also expose more expensive repairs at times.
