Here's my wife's 1962 bug we picked up about 5 years ago. It's her pride and joy! It has had a cosmetic restoration done before we bought it and I started in April pulling the engine and trans for new motor mounts. I ended up installing a kafer bar I had with new poly mounts, tore the 40hp down and replaced what was necessary. Somebody didn't change the oil on this engine it was burnt on everywhere inside and some of the bearing oil holes were almost completely clogged with burnt up oil. Surprisingly enough all of the bearings were in great shape and measured out in tolerance. I went through the heads and replaced the valves and gave everything a good cleaning/ polish. The only other thing I had to replace was the p/r tubes, muffler and heater boxes, oil cooler and intake everything else was factory that I sandblasted and powder coated(except the air cleaner and voltage regulator cover) got it installed today and everything in the engine bay is installed minus the throttle cable.

LOOKS GREAT NATE!! wish I was handy enough to be able to pull engine on my 65 and go through it like that!!

Before you go any further, I recommend you pull the engine back out and replace the red mounts with stock rubber ones. Your wife will hate driving the car with those red mounts.

Thanks millers! Bruce i appreciate the advice, I've ran stock, red polyurethane, black polyurethane(the best imo) and solid mount in the past so I know the woes. Reds aren't terrible but after a while they do start to squeak. They will stay in until I put a bigger engine and trans in the car my wife needs some more POWER! This all started as just pulling the engine and trans to put mounts in that I already had then one thing lead to another! I just can't bring myself to re-install greasy parts it drives me nuts.lol the engine ran really well for the shape it was in never ran hot, decent mpg, slow as hell but atleast the engine matches the rest of the car now

Very nice... all of it including the powder coating work. I'm not a fan of the any Poly mounts either, but I do understand your position. Sometimes It's a stop gap thing as well. Been there many times. Sometimes the correct parts (or the ones I preferred) were just not available in a timely manner either.

Haha thanks Mike as a matter of fact they are my garage slippers.lol The 62 is in really nice shape my wife and I bought it a couple of years ago for her it already had the paint, wheels, and interior done. Only thing I've done to it was raise the suspension a hair, put fresh rubber on it, Nardi wheel, rack and rear shades. Besides the engine colors my wife has picked out all the "accessories ". It definitely needed the engine mounts and a underside cleanup but as we all know things tend to snowball!

When I first started tearing it apart she asked me how long it was going to take, I figured a couple weekends to put new mounts in, re seal the motor and bomb can the tins.....4 months later!lol better its done right though.

Got about 50 miles on it now, it was running ok on my first drive but towards the end it started missing under load like it was running out of fuel

So I started with the carb(28 pict)
To get it to idle above 500 rpm the screw for the throttle plate had to be screwed way in and it was uncovering a progression hole.

So I put a 30 pict 1 on it and it ran better, idle speed screw was left right where it was before and it idled perfect right around 750-800rpm. Went and took it for a drive and it was still missing but more frequently.

Got to thinking figuring it had to do with spark, new cap, rotor, wires and plugs. I serviced the 009 and it has a 4 year old 6v pertronix, only thing left was the coil. Put a new one on and wallah purrs like a sewing machine:)

It's a good runner for sure, and very dry with the exception of 1 small leak on the oil pump/cover(1 or 2 drops after shutdown, no complaining here. Did a little run on my dragracer app on my phone and here's the results ImageImage
