CSP 42mm (1-5/8) exhaust system. Which cam and which size valves would work, with that size exhaust system? Will adding a 1.5 inch exhaust tuning cone insert, make the exhaust work like 38mm exhaust system?

In my opinion it also depends on the displacement, rpm etc. you are looking for.

I had a 2l with 42mm (Ahnendorp) exhaust, Scat C45 cam and 40mm dells 41x34mm valves which could easily run 7k rpm and had 156hp. I know the exhaust was a bit on the large sidez but it did run very nice.

My uncle has a 2.4 with 42mm csp exhaust (no cone), Web86c, if i am correctly 46x40mm valves. He told me that he had the idea the exhaust is a bit on the small side for that engine.

So it really depends on what you are looking for.

That 2l sounds sweet, what was the spec other than the cam? I’m running a stock 1800 with those 41x34 valves and twin 40s - it makes 83 hp.

I’m running an empi quietpack header (1.5”) plus a home made turbo muffler on 2.5” pipework.

I would happy with a 1700, with stock size valves,C25 or C35 cam, web 73, etc. The 38mm (1-1/2) exhaust systems, that are available suck,from what I have read. My 76 bug has a FI style rear apron. VS exhaust system won't fit. I like the CSP exhaust system,but its not available in 38mm.

Tangerine makes a nice 38mm exhaust system,but $2200 plus tax, is crazy.

The csp exhaust is indeed very nice, but also not cheap. When a steel exhaust is ok for you you could go for the steel version of the Ahnendorp exhaust and make your own silencer on that one. On the other hand the csp one is a bit more expensive (factor 2.5, but including silencer) but should work better with the smaller sized engine when you use the insert.

My old 2l had 40mm dells with 34mm venturies, 42mm intake manifolds, heavily ported heads with 41x34mm valves, (too high) 9:1 dynamic compression (i cannot remember how high the static was), 1,25mm deck, forged mahle 94mm pistons in original liners, 42x1.5mm stainless steel ahnendorp exhaust without silencer, nos original bosch 009 with pertronix ignitor and the Riechert style cooling system.

These work quite well for a small engine . you need to shorten the " J " tubes if running up right cooling. I ran one and fitted muffler and resonator up under the mudguard in a hide away system . It was very quiet .

That’s exactly what I’m running now but with a muffler. I now have the parts for a bas style tuck away system. Please it was quiet as that’s my goal.

By the time, I buy that Empi header, right muffler to fit my Beetle, new or used J tubes, plus shipping, cut/weld together, fit all the exhaust leaks.
Its cheaper the buy the CSP 42mm setup, and build the engine to work with the exhaust system.
