Newbie: Is this engine worth buying?

Post by fredc125 »

I found an engine for sale for my sandrail but don't know enough to know what I'm looking at. Can anyone tell me if this thing seems built right. Type 4 engine= 71x104 2413cc, 20/20 5 doweled crankshaft, camshaft=web 103,melling high volume oil pump, new AA 104 pistons, new cylinders, align bore case, all new bearings and seals, 8 mm swivel rockers, fully rebuilt heads to44/38 w 8mm stems and new guides, 8.94 to 1 compression ratio. Fresh built / pro mechanic/$3500. It's all kind of greek to me, any input would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

unless you can hear it running and or get it checked out , it may just be a collection of secondhand parts for $3500. Could the cam be 163 not 103 ?
The Melling oil pump will be cast iron , they have a reputation for not sealing well and leaking back into the engine causing low oil pressure issues . Another issue with big bore type 4's is sealing between the heads and cylinders . Look for any evidence (soot/carbon /oil). between the heads and cylinders .
No matter where you go , there you are !

The cam could be 163. Hard to tell (bad hand writing). Thank you for you input.

This is one of those things that's hard to asses over the Internet.
Can they run it for you?
If this is what they say it is, it's a good deal.
There could be a lot of variation in quality depending upon builder skill level.
Like was said, opening up the motor for those big cylinders requires real skill to do correctly.
But, with the right exhaust, make no mistake, this could be a beast in your sandrail.
