Planning my MS

Post by S_Mitchell »

Hello STF, it has been awhile. I've been running MS1 ignition only for 7 years and am planning out adding fuel. I originally had a 2017 engine and briefly ran fuel and spark (viewtopic.php?f=66&t=142094#p1151769) but an engine failure has me running a 1600sp ever since. I'm currently having a 2110 built and planning on upgrading to MS2 to eventually go full sequential. As of now, my plans are 38mm IDF throttle bodies from VWspeedshop on matchported CB injection manifolds. I want to change ignition too, but there's no practical reason to change from my current wasted spark setup yet.
I only have time to play with this during the winter, but not the summertime. Whenever my engine is ready, it'll just sit until fall before I can get it in. If I buy the TB's when the engine is complete, I can have the fuel system planned out and fitted by the time I can install the engine. I have to get back into reading the manual now. It was 10 years ago when I went down this rabbit hole and 7 since I've fooled with my current setup. I'm really looking forward to this though!

I've been all up in the megamanual for the last week and a half. I dream about circuitry at night. I don't understand much of it, just following directions from the manual. Think I'm going to buy the book Getting Started in Electronics so I can have a better idea of how everything actually works.
For some reason I thought MS2 could do full sequential, but now see it will only do sequential injection on a 4 cylinder. Guess I'll be sticking with wasted spark, which is fine. I found a deal on Ebay for some LS2 coils. I decided to buy them and made brackets this week.

Have you decided where to mount the coils?

I welded two studs into my engine bay years ago. One for my current coil, the other for a fuel pressure regulator. Plan is to use those and mount the regulator to the fuel rail when the time comes. This will put them up around the deck hinges and mostly out of sight.

I forgot the worst part of the whole megasquirt experience is computer to ECU comms. My old laptop died last year, now I'm trying to use my wife's old laptop for this. I can't get it to do anything. Anyone run the EFI Analytics bluetooth adapter? I've been wanting to get one for years, but never pulled the trigger. I think a cheap tablet and bluetooth would be ideal.

I've run their Bluetooth since 2014. It finally died this past late summer. I'll probably pick up a new one this late spring if I don't like the usb cable.

I use a cheap $200.00 Lenovo laptop computer.

Same here.

The BT adaptor works well with both an old Panasonic Toughbbook (for auto tuning) and an Android tablet for routine logging with Shadow Dash.

I really like not having a USB cable draped across the cabin.

BT adapter works great!
My old trusty 1600SP is no more. 20 years and 100,000 miles is pretty good though. I built that engine when I was 19. I have an old engine my dad built 20 years ago in right now, and not driving it much anyway. April is a slow time for me at work, so I've decided to go ahead and get my coils in and running. This will probably take a couple of weeks for everything to come in and wire up. I'll keep updating as it comes along.

Hi S.,
Not sure what you mean there mate?
Isnt your motor 4 cylinder? If so then isnt sequential ignition for only 4 cylinders perfect?

Cheers

Yeah, think my confusion is from reading regular MS2 manual and not Extra.

Got my LS2 coils fired off this morning. Forgot how tedious soldering on this board is.
It really cleaned up the right side of my engine bay. The drivers side is still pretty junky because the injection harness is just wrapped around the coil, also some make shift wiring.

Nice!
Those LS1 coils should give your motor some super duper fire..

Now you just need that FI sorted :D

So I decided to go ahead and upgrade to MS2 now. Got everything installed and firmware loaded up. I thought I had everything ready to go, but of course nothing is easy. As soon as I turn the key on the relay board goes crazy, clicking on and off. The car will crank and run fine above 1100 RPM or so. Anything less and the reset/sync loss happens. Short video of it here, you can hear the relays.
My car isn’t at my house and I can’t currently take the computer with me during the week because wife has Zoom meetings. Should have used a different gauge cluster with the reset counter.

I think there is a configuration error. I’ve tried to reload firmware a few time but something goes wrong every time. Decided to bring everything to work with me today and try a different computer.
