Hideaway Turbo and engine tin...

Post by Sideswipe »

About to wrap up my turbo install on my Ghia and I'm trying to get ideas on what to do with the rear tin. Anyone have pictures of how you modified your tin to clear the turbo, and what you did to help keep the hot air out?

Yeah, this is the bit CB doesn't tell you about... amongst other things. I had to cut out some of the engine seal and rear apron. Then do some cardboard-aided-drafting. Either you can mod the rear apron piece, or extend something off the cyl tins. I did the first of the two. Either way, make sure you really seal your shroud to your tins and engine case. I used silicon sealant. As a consequence, the motor never has head temps above 120C (GM head sensor) or oil temps above 90C (sensor in deep sump). This is in Australia on 35C days (95F).

I used an aftermarket piece of tin and found that it worked very well. Totally creating a piece of breast tin from scratch is time wasted, IMHO. A $15-$20 piece of tin that can be hacked up easily and look decent when it's done is certainly a time saver. Like petew, I too did do a cardboard mock up and then transferred the cuts to the apron. This kept me from putting cuts where they didnt need to be. I ended up cutting my tin into two pieces to make them fit easier. My grinder, jigsaw and some rubber fuel line to cover the cuts I made around the intake piping came in handy. I did need to cut the rubber seal around the area where the turbo nozzle comes up through but angled the turbo in such a way that it just barely cleared the metal part of the apron. My whole goal was to not cut up or drill in the engine compartment at all with this set up and I succeeded!

Anyhow, depending on how much your turbo and other components protrude will determine how much time and effort it will take to tweak and re-work pre-made tin for your setup. Below is how mine turned out. It looks pretty stock and keeps the exhaust heat below the tin.

Luckily I won't need to cut anything but the rear engine tin (Ghia). I have a coupe of tins I can hack up to make something. I'll probably do a split piece for easier installation. I'll post pics after I get done with it.
