EDIS ,MS-2 3.57 to wasted spark computer controlled

Post by damo99 »

hi i have a MS-2 3.57 with a EDIS igniton system .
i want to go wasted spark but computer controlled system as i want to use launch control & rev limiter
what is the best way to do this and what internal mods would be needed if any
also i want to still run the coil 4 in 1 coil from the EDIS system.
would i need a coil igniter for these or what else is needed
will i be able to run my vr sensor still from the EDIS system

Read the manual another 3 times from "cover" to "cover", sift through hundreds of pages from the late 90s that should have been deleted or updated long ago, then finally find the answer on some nearly forgotten area of the interwebs. Or here:

Stuff like this makes me dizzy just looking at it. Maybe I'll learn how to solder one day.

The manuals have all be rewritten lately and (mostly) brought up to date.
(still a work in progress)
Doing what you want is actually pretty easy and well documented.

Your 3.57 board can read the VR sensor directly.

You need two ign drivers to drive that coil, You can add one internally.
My preference would be an external driver, you can build on or buy a 4 channel one from Mario or DIYAutotune
This keeps the high power ignition noise out of the ECU.

All that is needed is a 330 ohm resistor as a current limiter and the driver transistor itself, and getting two signals to it.

Your existing setup can do retard and fuel cut rev limiting, just not ignition cut of the progressive or full kind.

If you were considering going sequential and wanted an almost plug an play setup, a few of us have been working on a solution for that, its designed to interface a MS2 to a MS3X board as the output driver.
(It would still need external driver to run your current coil, so may not be a good solution for you)

I will be ordering a new set of the shorter boards today.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

I'm having some f the same questions, building a MS2-V3.0 board for wasted spark. I've read the msextra manual a few times, and searched a bit here and on the ms forums, but still have some confusion. I see that a I need another Bosch BIP373 for the edis style coil. So, my questions are: Do I install the Q16 driver on top of the board and solder it into the three traces provided? The second driver, I can add to an additional heat sink on the underside of the board, no issue there. Can I share the ground from Q16? The left leg jumps to the top connection of R26 with the resistor, correct? Where to wire the center pin on the driver, I think it's the output to the coil, but where does it go?
Sorry for all the questions. There is a lot of info on wasted spark/ MS2, but most of what I was finding related to coil on plug for 6 and 8 cylinders and was different.

There is a diagram and instructions near the bottom of this page. I think diyautotune.com also has there own version on there site.

One can also use an external igniter/driver and just need to route the signals out to drive it.

Of course one can also switch to VW Mk4 4 tower coil with built in igniters for less cost and probably higher reliability.

Either method keeps the high powered ignition noise out of the ECU and wiring harness, which is a huge win.
(MS3 and MS3pro were designed to only use external ignition drivers for very good reason)

Thank you both. Chip, I have been over that page, I know it, but somehow missed it. Piledriver, the info about the VW coil pack w built in drivers is great. For the time being, I'm going to build it with the internal drivers. Knowing that I can route the lines out to that style tower coil is good info, if it is a problem this way. I've never worked with a megasquirt before, but I'm determined to build it and learn how to tune it.
