Help me find a quality distributor rebuilder/replacement

Post by MontanaMark »

The distributor in my 82 Air Cooled 2.0 Fuel Injected, Vanagon began to squeal pretty badly yesterday. Its been problematic for a while. Need to find out if anyone knows where one could get hold of a "stock rebuilt replacement" or the name of a "good reputable rebuilder." I've been on the phone all day once again trying to find something that will work with zero results. Thought I struck pay dirt with BusDepot this morning when I saw they were having a sale on a rebuilt point type distributor, that the listing says is exactly what I am looking for, but after calling them to make absolutely sure, they advise "OOPS," that one is not for "fuel injected motors." and will not work, sorry. http://www.busdepot.com/022905205s Really good one, since I don't believe any Vanagons came with carbs in America, ever, did they? Weirdest thing is that their part number is exactly the same as the bottom number on my original distributor??? Thoughts??

My original distributor numbers:
Z42
0231 170 093
022 905 205S

Electronic aftermarket is out. I've started finding cautions on several sites stating what Pertronix has told me. The below was listed on "JBugs" site.

"PLEASE NOTE:
There are NO new distributors for fuel injected engines (1975-on).
To our knowledge, the industry does not provide any distributor compatible with Fuel Injected engines."

I think he does iron-body ones.

Really good one as you are being fed absolute prime grade bullshit.
If it has the same part# its the right distributor.

They were used on dual carb engines as well in Europe.
They might not be able to get vac cans with the exact right specs...
Perhaps they don't want to certify them for emissions reasons, still misleading info as presented.

You would be better off with a fully programmable unit, and they sell them, gasoline is different enough these days that its amazing those older EFI setups work at all.(fueling and ignition curves can surely do with some optimisation, the fuel side is pretty easy to tweak if you can follow instructions and have a wideband O2 sensor/controller handy)
If you don't live in an emissions police state that requires everything to have the right part#s, you will probably do far better on emissions than factory settings.

There was nothing exceptional about the early LJet EFI distributors. The EFI gets its signal from the points, and a pertronix or Compufire module is fully compatible, if you get the version for vacuum advance.(71+ late T1s in the USA)

DJet---yes they were different with a second set of points to time the injection, but VW wasn't using DJet in 75+, except maybe on some 2L 914s.

I would still hit Glenn up if you want it rebuilt properly, worst he can say is no.

BTW: The distributor is supposed to get a drop of oil every oil change on the advance mechanism, the wick is under the rotor.
I'll guess is it hasn't seen any oil since Reagan was president.

It would probably go another 20 years if taken apart, cleaned up,oiled and put back together.
It's really not that hard.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
