Microsquirt Direct drive Waste spark or Module

Post by sideshow »

Constraints;
microsquirt
ford coils, modules on hand or just the coil
single l-jet+TPS inspired plenum
daily driver nothing exotic, batch fire, waste spark, dead simple
----
Trying to figure out and having no luck on; if it is a better idea to direct drive the coils internally or use the Ford module and SAW/PIP?

Instinct would say the crusty OEM Ford module is beyond its useful life and best be eliminated, or does reliability increase by placing the load & noise in an inexpensive world class housing?

The only feature I see loosing is “limp mode” fixed timing, this is assuming only part of the ECU fries.
And the drawback of frying any of the MS by running 4 injectors and ignition in house.

Also I didn't have much luck googling pro and con, so if you have any deep links post them up!
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

I always opt to get rid of the module. It's less wiring and one less used part to fail. I assume you plan to use BIPs if you don't use the module, right?

Don't plan on modding the ecu, keeping it simple;
IMPORTANT! You can directly drive a maximum of one coil per ignition driver with MicroSquirt! This is because the coil driver (the VB921) can only sink enough current for one coil. That one coil can be a double ended 'wasted spark' type coil for two cylinders/coil, and it will be fine. But you CANNOT 'direct drive' two separate coils in wasted spark configuration driven directly off of one ignition driver (see below).
The art work: http://www.microsquirt.info/dcoils_wastedspark.gif

I am not space constrained like on a bike or PWC I want the long term reliable method.
Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

Re appropriate aled and wled for 4 ign outs and use golf/polo/Audi VAG logic waste spark module.
