1967 VW Beetle windshield wiper arms

Post by spencer.adams »

I'm restoring a 1967 VW Beetle with metal sunroof. I'm looking for some new windshield wiper arms. The one on the car are warn out and a mechanic friend of mine said you could buy some that attached differently than the orginal one. He said the were more like a clamp that attached to the wiper stud instead of the single screw appling pressure. Has anyone seen this type of windshield wiper arms for a 67 Beetle? Is so do you know where I can buy them? Thanks

I recall seeing some of those many years ago, but have no idea where they came from - they struck me at the time as something from J.C.Whitney ;)
How faithful of a restoration are you after? `65-`67 bellcranks and pivots are becoming rather rare, as are the `68/`68 with larger posts (`67 through `69 motors will interchange if you fit the correct bellcrank for your links).
If function trumps concours points, I strongly recommend that you toss it all and use `70/`71 assemblies (`71 Super fits too) with the bigger splined spindles and bolt-on arms. The `70/`71 round motor is more powerful and electrically compatible; the drawback when originality matters is that the support "bale" for the original squarish motor has to be bent and/or cut to make room for it.
Rather than enlarge the holes in the cowl for the larger spindle seals, I usually just cut the pre`70 seals in two with a razor blade and sandwich the cowl between them (tight enough to not leak but not so tight as to transmit motor noise to the cowl).

Thanks Marc. I'll check J.C. Whitney.
