Fuel hose needed for a '73 T-1 Beetle, how long?

Post by Jim Ed »

OK, so I want to replace the fuel hose.
I was thinking of ordering 6 feet of
Gates® - Fuel Injection/MPI Hose Part # 27094 $5.69 per Foot 1/4 inch I.D. from O'RielyAuto Parts.
Would that be enough?
TIA!

if you have to order it..... order the correct 5mm hose from a VW supplier online. If you go to the auto parts house because of emergency needs.... buy 1/4"

That should be ample length, you normally only need half that for a Beetle...but I'd rather see you stick with the correct size factory-style braid-reinforced hose, N 20 355 1.

I agree but, I wanted to do like Piledriver recommended. Besides, the Gate EFI hose that I mentioned is ethanol resistant.

Do you anticipate running higher than E-10 alcohol content? The German hose handles E-10 just fine.

I am going to replace the fuel pump so, I thought I would replace the hose too.
It currently has the 5mm I.D. German hose that you mentioned. I replaced them about 3 years ago.
Should I keep the 5mm I.D. German hose a while longer if there is no problem with them?
TIA!

This is what I got now. It was changed about 3 years ago.

Normally the German hose is good for at least five years, I'd go by the condition of the hoses in the engine compartment - if they're still supple and without any signs of cracking at the exposed ends, the tank-to-chassis and chassis-to-engine lines should be OK for a while longer. You may even be able to get by with merely trimming an inch off each end of the pieces in the engine compartment, too, but I don't want it on my head if you have a fire someday so if there's any doubt, go ahead as planned.

Looking for metric fuel hose see https://belmetric.com/. They also have the screw clamps used with metric fuel hose that do not cut into the hose jacket. Because most have never seen the engine compartment when new, they are not familiar with Oetiker hose clamps. Most of the hose clamps in a new VW air-cooled were Oetiker clamps; one use squeeze clamps.
