Dellorto DRLA 40 tuning

Post by drewBAKER »

I just rebuilt my single two barrel DRLA 40 and stuck it back on my car. Everything jet wise is what came with the carb. I am having a hard time getting it to idle. I am not that proficient when it comes to tuning. I can get it to run but making it run perfect is not my forte. Is there anything I can try to make it idle better? Also upon acceleration it falls on its face for a second and then picks up again. I watched a video on YouTube and the guy said that this is a lean condition.

Basically I need all the help I can get about tuning my carb.

First off, I'm not familiar with this particular carb, just a few carbs in general so I might be able to give you some advice. Take note that it is from an amateur so it is not gospel. this is just something you can try until someone who really knows can chime in. I'm also assuming all other components like the fuel pump, lines, and filter are in good condition.

One thing I can say, about falling on it's face anyhow, is that it seems like your accelerator pump. When you hit the gas pretty good this gives you a shot of fuel right down the throat of the carb so it doesn't lean out and falter just this way. This is also why people try pumping the pedal to get a stubborn engine started even though it doesn't work on fuel injected vehicles. To test it, remove your air cleaner and look down the throat of your carb. Work the throttle by hand to it's full extent and you should see a thin stream of fuel shoot down the carb. You might need a flashlight.

As far as the poor idling, check the simple part first. There should be a screw that runs up against the throttle right on the carb itself. I'm not saying this is a fix but you might be able to run that in a turn or two in order to get it to idle. If that doesn't work for you, if you can locate your idle adjustment screws I always set them at three turns out and try to dial it in from there.

Hi,

What is your jetting?

Besides single dual carbs are troublesome as per people in the forums to idle but I wouldn't know since I have dual webers and went EFI with them.
