There are three different oil cooler seals used on a type 1. Make sure you've got the right ones for your application. Do not use sealer, just clean the surfaces and dry the surfaces and stick em' in.

Like I said previously, make absolutely sure you install the correct seals, otherwise you will need to do it all over again.

If you have a large-passage case and cooler (or an OEM German doghouse adapter) the 021 117 151 10mm orange seals, dry with no stud spacers, are correct.

A
little radial play as you've described is normal.
Pre`70 Type IIIs used a 311 117 151A, also orange, but it was 8mm and considerably thicker. No application for these on any Type I, but they're found in the 113 198 007AF gasket set.
If you're adapting a small-passage cooler or adapter to a large-passage case (or vise-versa) you need the 8x10mm adapter seals which come in the 111 198 029 kit. Usually they're green, but gray is sometimes seen. Which side goes up, and whether the spacer washers are used or not, depends upon the case & cooler involved.
With a small-passage case and cooler, the 111 117 151 8mm seal is used. Originally these were black, but white and orange are sometimes seen too.
http://www.oldvolkshome.com/oilcool.htm is a
fairly good reference, but it's contained the same glaring errors since it was first posted regarding when the spacer washers are needed. The truth is simple, they're ONLY needed with the flat-bottom, small-passage pre`70 singleport cooler when using the conversion seals to put it on a large-passage case. Fortunately, there's rarely any call for that particular downgrade. Another possible but undesirable scenario would be the grafting of a pre`70 small-passage Type III cooler onto a doghouse adapter...there's really NO 100% correct seal choice for that combination, so the simplest answer is,
don't.
