fuel level sending unit compatibility

I have a bug with the lever arm/ vibrator/ gauge setup that is giving me fits.
can a ghia style tube type sending unit be swapped in?

well that sucks.
I have been chasing this problem for a bit, and cannot seem to find the issue.
I will have to start the troubleshooting back at strp one, an drun it again.
