FUBARU, Stirarri? 76 308 GT4 -turbo Subaru power project

From Webster:

Blasphemy - the act of insulting or showing contempt or lack of reverence for a religious deity or the irreverence towards religious or holy persons or things.

That being said my car should be a parts car. It's rusty, the motor and trans were junk, paint sucks, and it has 105,000 miles and 36 hard years on everything.

Looking at my options, it made absolutely ZERO sense to throw a used 308 motor and trans in this thing. It adds no value to an already worn out version of a model so few care about when I'm just going to beat on it. I decided to go a different route when powering this thing, no doubt a route I felt bad sharing on here given what the reactions may be, BUT alas here it is.

The car is getting a 2.0 Turbo Subaru STi motor and transmission with a subarugears.com locking spool to convert to rwd. Also from subarugears are the axle flange adapters. (I haven't bought these subarugears parts yet but soon, just wanted advice first) It has a larger fuel pump and boost controller which will bring me to the 300 whp/300 wh tq neighborhood. As for the sound and aesthetics.....well there were boxer Ferrari's in the past. The gt4 wasn't one of them but it's not a completely batsh*t idea given the layout.

Lastly, I'm not ruining some treasured car. This car was a POS that you wouldn't have wanted anyway. If I restored it to original, you likely wouldn't have wanted it then either. I'm doing this with the goal of getting on the track with less than (or equal to) $10k in a Ferrari including the cost of the car. Maybe it's not a real Ferrari anymore. It's a Fubaru now, or maybe it's a Surrari. Not sure yet.

Anyway I'd like to get another honest to God Ferrari powered Ferrari someday as a street car to cruise around in. Something like a 456 but for now a gt4 I can beat on and not care about hurting it's resale value is a fun prospect.

Motor is just sitting in there now. I need mounts (anybody have a generic template or extras laying around? ) I haven't bought the adapter stuff from subarugears but soon.

LOVE the forum, I've browsed around for about a year now but I figured this would be my intro. I want to be just like you guys when I grow up.

Here are some pictures of what I'm doing so far and hopefully some of you mid engine guys can help me out (No idea what I'm doing):

heck ya, this is gonna be cool! an italian 914 ;) edit: i'd look at what the 914 guys have done, it may be similar to your process, ie implementing cables shifters. probably will need to use a water air intercooler since it wont get much fresh air back there as well.

I've got a vent back there on the lid and also two intakes on either side. Here;s a better view.

I had a water to air in a turbo rotary 911 I had and I just prefer air with possible. Less hassle.

Pffft I suppose you think you are the first :D

Supplied the parts needed to do a Ferrarri some time back and it has been going well :
1 Pair Subaflanges
1 Subaspool 2WD locking spool
1 Subaplate to close off the gearbox.

You can just see the Subaplate peeking out in this photo :

Your project is gonna be awesome!

Blasphemy? Never heard of it...

Very cool project.

I need those Subarugears parts, and then some, too. Maybe they'll have a x-mas special. You thinking of going through Raby or straight to Subarugears? I haven't decided yet.

I'd love to have a Christmas special but it's not going to happen this year.
Am investing in the engineering and tooling for additional ratios so money is tight.
No difference to the end user if you go through Subarugears or Raby.
Subarugears has everything in stock so whatever you like :-)

You know I live in Georgia and I think it will actually be more expensive for to go with Raby. I'll have to pay sales tax....So I think I;ll go direct.

Todd, thanks for responding to my emails as well (gillingoutside) and no I knew I wasn't the first! I was going to put a rover v8 in the back of this thing and I happened to buy a front bumper from Adam the owner of the white car. He told me about it and I bought the Subaru front clip about 2 months later and sold the Rover junk.

Opinions needed!

I'd like to use a Subagears beetle mount and modify it for the motor mount. Any reason that would would be way off? I need something to cut down on mount design time and since the 308 is basically just a tube frame thats steel I think it will be a good start. I can move it around and weld in whatever works. Here's a picture with the motor out that shows the layout in there. (Best pic I have at the moment)

Thanks!

The Subagears mount probably would save some design time, just for the fact that you would be starting out with the Suby engine mount points already fixed. Hard to tell what other options might be better, or even feasible from this picture. But it looks like you have plenty of structure to work with. I’d take a look at the engine mount cross-member in your Suby clip. With some hacking and imagination you might be able to do something slick with it.

Maybe a dumb question, but i'm guessing that you drop the motor in from the top on this thing?

Exactly my thought on saving time. I sold the rest of the clip and made some money back but I didn't get the subframe, the other guy wanted it. I did get the trans mount however from the Subaru. Plenty of room it seems to move it around and I do have the right angle with that mount it seems.

I do have to drop everything in from the top on this thing, it doesn't look like any other way around it.

Todd, on the white car do you know if he shortened the transmission at all or can you tell from that picture?

Thanks!

Cool project - but I would have soooo done the 3.0L six instead. It would have still sounded somewhat like the flat-plane crank original!
Cool project though, looking forward to the updates.

You might also consider the Small Car Vanagon style mount. It allows fitting a cross-member to the front of the motor. It has some limitations but does provide another option. There's also a guy on 914World that is making a subframe specifically for Suby-914 converions, it might be adaptable to your conversion with some mods? Or purchase it in parts or partially assembled and make it fit your chassis? Lots of options these days!

Yeah If I couldn't have V8 then boost was the only other option.

I'll have to look up some of those other sources. I'm not on 914World, do you know the guys name over there that makes some? Thanks

Jay

On the white car he used the Subaplate - just like they do when putting subie transmissions into 914's.
You unbolt the 4WD output yoke/plate off the back of the trans.
You remove the transfer gears and center differential.
You get the pinion nut off and install the Subaspool, then re-installing the pinion nut.
You bolt the Subaplate onto the back of the center diff housing to close up the trans.
Nice, clean billet look.
