Time for a compression test.

Leak down test time, compression is pushing oil past the rings and coming out the breather. That was the fate of small engines put in late model buses. They just did not have enough torque to be happy with the late model gearing. If your lucky you might be able to get away with rings and a transaxle.

I call bull pucky on this. I have run an 1800 with a six rib for 250K miles at this point, still waiting for my first engine problem. Yeah I burn some oil when I am running consistantly at 75 mph anymore, but big deal. A quart every 1000 miles on an engine with 250K is good enough in my book.

I would guess that the OP needs to make sure her crankcase ventilation system is working correctly, if she has an aftermarket carb set up, either progressive or dual carbs, there is a very good chance it is not.

It also sounds like the classic lack-of-crankcase-venting to me, but it's hard to determine from the original description. What carb or carbs are you running, and did you block the crankcase breather tube that used to run to the air cleaner? Is the problem different with the engine cold, and/or do you have the choke hooked up? Was it running well when you bought it, or is this how you got it originally and you're trying to fix it?

Also, please indicate what year and size engine, what year trans, and USE PUNCTUATION so we can tell which one you're talking about.
