1969 bug to 1967 bug parts interchange?

Post by landrocket »

I found a 1969 bug that I really just want the 1600 dp engine. How compatible are the parts to my 1967 bug, if any? Trans. ? fenders and lights look the same? Thx, guys.

`67 Beetles have a list as long as your arm of "one-year-only" parts. The front fenders are just one - the only year with "upright" headlights, no bumper slits, and horn grilles. Rear fenders are also different (bumper slits/holes and taillight mounting hole location). Transmission itself is very similar, but `67 was still swingaxle and `69 was 4-joint ("IRS") - if you know what you're doing, you can convert a `69 trans to work in a `67 by swapping the differential carrier and sideplates, but it's not a job for the novice.
`69 Bugs don't come with a 1600DP, rather a cottage-cheese case 1500SP - if someone's turned one of those doorstops into a 1600DP it won't last long...what's the engine ID?

Considered to be especially collectible because of this, but also avoided by some because it's one of the harder cars to find "correct" parts for (for example, nobody makes repops of the outer doorhandles which are almost always broken).

Wow, thx for the quick reply. I found it on Craigslist. Don't know the engine ID. Says it is a 1600 dp, rebuilt, pic looks like a dp. Well, so much for that. I just tried to find it and copy/paste here and now it is gone. thx anyway, guys.
