GL5 and molycoated syncros

Post by fastback »

Is it a No-no to use GL-5 Zf spec 75W140 syntetic Castrol on the molycoated syncros?

No, but I'd recommend Castrol LSX90, which provides top notch EP protection and is the correct viscosity for your transmission. Which ZF differential are you using? ZF changed their friction discs over the years.

The friction discs of that era I consider "experimental", so I can't say for certain which oil may give best performance with what are probably very worn antiquated discs. I think Bruce suggests the GM LSD additive, but I'd wait to add anything until having a good reason to do so.

I don't know what Ricardo UK's "official" recommendation for gear lube is, but I know their behind-the-scenes choice is LSX90 .. at least for their own racing boxes, virtually all of which would be running more modern LSDs. It's a very good oil that is inexpensive. I wish I could get it here in the US.

Can i send some bottles over or is there a limitation (danger, because oil)?

Wow .. I appreciate the offer, but we have a few oils here that are at least as good .. they're just a lot more expensive.

I can tell you what my gear cutter would say .. run the other way from most synthetic gear lubes. Synthetics may be great in your engine, but the EP package falls short in most synthetic gear lubes. (We've been going against the grain on this for the past decade, and continue to hear tales from those who've learned the hard way .. at least in performance applications.)

Weddle recommends synthetic for their gears.....but I have never had any trouble using non-synthetic oils either...
