I found some used Weddle gears online that are close to the final ratio I want, but I am not sure what to make of them.
#1 I see some surface rust. Not sure why gears inside a gearbox would rust.
#2 Would said rust impact the hardening/wear surfaces, etc?
#3 They are marked 1.04 with what appears to be an S. Are these the Weddle Sportsman gears?
#4 If they are Weddle Sportsman, what will they handle?
Just trying to decide if saving a couple hundred dollars here will be worth it in the long run. These would be going in an already stretched 091 fighting a supercharged Ecotec.
Thanks!

1) Well .. they aren't in a gearbox. They've been sitting for awhile without a protective oil film.
2) Possibly .. but it's impossible to tell without bead-blasting the rust off and then inspecting them (both teeth and bore).
Some guys need to save money wherever they can, while others insist on new stuff only. There is no right or wrong on this, it's just where you fall in the spectrum, and whether the product meets your expectations/needs.

That rust is nothing to be concerned with. Give them a light bead blasting then coat them in oil while you build your gearbox.
The S refers to the helix angle. Those ones are close to stock angle, so they're good for street use. Closer to straight cut reduces the axial thrust, so they're better for drag racing. But they are noisier.
Are those gears 091 width?

Sure looks like it .. Also looks like a nasty rust spot on the cone in photo #2.

Thanks gents. This is looking more like a "save $200 now, spend $700 more later" deal.
Why crack the trans to throw in possibly bad gears.
