Which Distributer to use?

Post by carl4x4 »

I'm building up a 1950cc long stroke type1 engine, using twin 40 Weber carbs. Looking for some advice on what distributer to use. I have a couple of distributers on the shelf, one is a nearly new Bosch 009 (genuine) with Petronix? ignition, the other looks like an original Bosche distributor with vacuum advance, also fitted with Petronix ignition.
As far as I remember neither of the manifolds have outlets for a vacuum advance, although I suspect I could drill, tap&fit one if required.

Read a lot of warning on using the 009 as it doesn't have sufficient advance on the timing, so which dist would be best to use for this engine? or is there another make/model that I should look at?

Thanks in advance

You don't use manifold vacuum to control spark advance - that would be exactly backwards, giving maximum advance at idle. The question is, do the carburetors have provision for a ported vacuum connection?
Please furnish the entire 10-digit Bosch number of your vacuum-advance carburetor - there are many varieties, and only a few are desirable.
