What Ratios? 2.7 Type 4

Post by 56T4 »

Hi all,I need some input on selecting a swingaxle trans combo for my Oval.Engine wise its a 2718cc type 4 making 172rwhp@5200rpm and 206 ft lbs @4300rpm.Tyres are 205/65/15 giving a height of 25.4inchs.The car is a weekend toy only, built more for scaring V8s than cruising down the freeway.I want to be able to stand on it within reason without anything braking so the questions are-
ratios?
R&P?
case? rhino? gusseted?
superdiff or quaife?
axles?
other mods?
It will be built in the US,so who do I get to build it?

If you're having it built in the US anyhow, you may want to contact Rancho to discuss your requirements. They use good parts.
Myself, I would use:
3.88G (8:31) R&P
Rhino or Autocraft case
Albins gears
GT LSD or TBD (never a super diff) http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/355208.jpg

You may end up with gearing something like 3.78 x 2.21 x 1.58 x 1.12, allowing for some highway use.

Your hardest search may be finding a good pair of axles. I'd use the strongest-looking '66 axles before any Chinese junk.

Although you aren't drag racing, you have a very grunty engine. Before gusseting, I'd personally do the mods discussed in this thread: http://www.shoptalkforums.com/viewtopic ... 50&t=89944
