Welding on Oxyboxer number 1 main journal???

Post by 3literboy »

Ok, now that Rocky wont do my center thrust conversion, I had to do some investigating.

Anyways, I found a fella that has been doing aluminum welding fro 40 years. he has been at the same location in tacoma for 22 years. Wild Bill my crank grinder recommended him. I could weld a mm on the face of the case journal on number 1 and then line bore to Chrysler bearing size 2.519 or just install a type 4 silverlite metal backed ceneter bearing there. I am going to have to machine the front bushing on my Porta tool. It needs to be flipped backward and machined for a wasser boxer case, and use an adapter ring I bought from Todd at Rimco for the Number 1 seal location. This way I can line bore my case to 2.519 and use all Chrysler bearings instead of a type 4 on the Number 1.

The guy needs about $250 to weld up the rear main and the rear main seal area. Then I would line bore , and then use the thrust cutter to cut the rear thrust area for the Chrysler bearing. The other scenario is the $100 bronze thrust plates from Jaycee, $135 for the Rimco machining, for type 4 and Chrysler bearings, $175 for weld up seal area for bugpack 4 inch seal, and $145 for a line bore, or $450 just to be able to run a flanged crank. Oh and another $100 to widen crank thrust areas to 1.100....

Any recommendations

Welding aluminum leaves the whole area in a -T0 (dead soft state)...
I would avoid welding aluminum unless absolutely required, at least not on a load bearing surface/primary structure...

The seal area is NBD done right. As long as you aren't using it as thrust it MIGHT be OK, but then again if you are going with the thrust at #3, why add the 1mm, and can't you just add a shim at #1 like the late thrust setup?
That's steel.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Whats this for? Are you trying to put an all T4 mains/flanged crank in an oxy boxer, and want a better thrust setup?

I'm using an 88mm flanged crank, T1 mains with a T4 center in a wbx case and have relocated the thrust to the #3 main.

I use a full circle T1 thrust bearing on the #3 saddle, and have modified the crank snout so I can run T4/914 endfloat shims on the flywheel side of the #3 main. The straight cut cam gear has been machined to allow it to carry T1 end float shims, so its shimmed both sides of the thrust bearing with 3 shims each side.

Because Im using a T1 crank in a 2.1lt wbx case, I used a 1mm/case oversize number 2 split main steel backs in the number 1 bearing position. It only required drilling an additional dowel for the other bearing half to hold it in place. I can locate some pictures if it would help.
