I just picked up a valve adjustment decal and an oil bath air cleaner warning decal for the engine compartment on my '71 bug that I've been wanting to put in there for a while now to give it more of that stock look (like I said, the local VW group calls me "the Stock Nazi"). The air cleaner sticker placement is obvious since I have a later oval oil bath air cleaner, but is there a particular place where the valve adjustment decal should go? All I've read says "fan shroud," but not WHERE on the fan shroud.

Goes on the right hand side just above the heater hose outlet to the right of the fan
If it's a 71 it would have had the dual port engine originally, which uses .004"/0.10mm sticker like the one below but no biggy.

Cool. My mechanic sets that stuff for me anyway, so he knows what the appropriate valve clearance is. The one I ordered may actually have the "correct" clearance on it; I swiped that image off the Google image search as an example. And the whole debate about valve clearance is one that seems to rage on to this very day - read the write-up on VW Resource: http://www.vw-resource.com/valve_adjust.html
They changed to 0.006" in '71 with the AS... series engines, and say 0.006" is okay for all engines.
I have no idea if my mechanic sets mine at .004 or .006 - all I know is that a few times a year she starts running rough & hot (usually with drastic seasonal changes), and he crawls all up in her rear end for adjustments to the carb / valves / timing & advance / a token oil change, and she runs happy again. My bug was manufactured in late June '71 (I always thought she was July, but I recently researched her VIN). Her engine is NOT original, but it IS a 1600 dual port. One of these days I'll get off my rear end and look up when her engine was built, just for the hell of it.
Another (dumb) question - I think the oil bath air cleaner decal is a water transfer ... what's the best way to put that on my air cleaner without taking it out of the car & laying it on it's side, which would involve emptying it out first & possibly creating a mess that's more hassle than it's worth? I was going to wait until the air cleaner needed fresh oil anyway, but I drive the car so infrequently (maybe 3k - 4k miles a YEAR) that I really don't feel like waiting that long

"...the 0.006" setting just allows for more "sloppy" maintenance..."
End of story. VW changed the spec to reduce the incidence of problems caused by inattention to regular maintenance (specifically, burnt exhaust valves - primarily in the US market).
There was never really any intake-valve-related reason for changing IMO...our shop used to use .004" intake/.006" exhaust on most customer cars.
I hate to admit it, but I'm somewhat guilty of sloppy maintenance, but only because I drive mine so rarely. Since I only put about 3k - 4k miles a year on mine, I have to remember to stop by the shop 3-4 times a year just for minor adjustments as the seasons change, oil change every six months, etc. Last year it just slipped my mind and I didn't think to stop by until I couldn't keep the damn thing running every time I took my foot off the throttle.
MAN, sometimes I wish I had my old job where I only had about a 10 mile commute on surface streets / back roads; back then I used to drive her to work a few times a week and she was always "fresh." Now that I have a 70 mile round trip commute down highways with a 70mph speed limit and share the roads with eighteen wheelers she only gets out on the weekends, and even then not every weekend
