091 inspection

hey guys, i made a deal to buy an 091 rear shift transaxle from someone today, im going to pick it up next week and i would like to make sure everything is in working order.. can you explain what im looking for , preferable with picture. i know next to nothing about them and i havent been able to find exactly what im looking for through the forums , please help me out! thank you

You probably mean an 091/1 side shift. About all you can do is unbolt the bell housing and inspect the R&P closely. This, along with inspection of the magnetic drain plug (and the oil itself) should be an indicator of internal condition. Do this before purchasing the transmission.

its for a baja bug, its from a 77 bus , i believe its a nose shift correct? looks just like the first picture on that link

There's not much you can do with it out of the car. Typically when they are worn out the R&P is still OK, but it will jump out of gear or make bearing noises when under a load.

If you are paying $500 or less then you are at least getting the core charge if you have to have it rebuilt.
