stock internalled 091 or pyramid 002 in a type 3

Post by ruff »

hello guys,
can you tell me if its possible to use these transmissions?

are they strong enough in stock form?
are the stock gear ratio's OK for driving (is it comparable to a drag race box?)

I mean, is it a good idea to use stock box with new intermediate housing, or would it be a complete waste of money?

I ve searched a bit, but there are so many options, i dont know where to start :)

I have a 2276 turbo with a maximum of 400 hp (in the future)

cheers, P

I have an original 1977 bus trans in my baja. I've abused it a lot, big 2275cc engine... They are very strong. The gearing wouldn't be good with normal size tires. I have 29" tires and the cruising rpms are perfect.

strong boxes both of them.
but some of them have both fine tooth 3. and 4. gear.
they might not hold up for the torque of a turbo engine.
fine tooth 4.th in my 091 did not hold up :)

hello,
it seems that the only ratio that changes compared to for instance type 3 trans is another final drive 4.57 vs 4.12
1 to 4 th gear ratio's are the same.
I guess it could be used as is for the street if you dont mind close ratio's?
speed difference at 3000 is about 10 km/h

no the bus 600 adapter is designed for 002 (late type 1 gears, which is shorter)
you have to get the 091 intermediate housing from Land products. (se the samba for ad's)

LanD housings are sold out. :?
but i saw a thread from turbobaja recently where he used a 091 with the bus 600 kit and a spacer plate of 8mm (i think for the longer gears)

viewtopic.php?f=50&t=133067&p=1035058&h ... 1#p1035058

maybe this way it can work ? or are the main shaft bearing sizes also different?

I do have a type 1 prostreet plus from rancho without diff still... could i maybe reuse parts from this box?
