66 Porche 912 5 speed in a 70 type 1 pan?
Okay here's the deal. Just found out that the 66 912's had an optional 5 speed trans. I may just have a hook for a complete 66 912 that's rotted in half and CHEAP CHEAP! If this thing has a 5 speed trans, what are the odds of making it work in a 70 pan with 2337 motor? I noticed there's a side shaft for something on the right side and of course the nose cone is different. The nose cone isn't a concern because I can modify the pan as much as need be but what's the side shaft for and will it mate to my 2337? I know guys mate the 912 motors to the VW transmissions all the time with a flywheel change. Oh and will it hold up to 200 hp? Just a thought!

I'm guessing there weren't a lot of 5 speed optioned cars then in 66?

People bought 912s because they couldn't afford a 911.

All the 901 / 2 five speeds with 912 gearing I've scrounged up were from 1968 model years.

Okay, well I guess we'll see what it is and go from there. Is it worth the conversion if I have to spend $500 for the trans or am I better off just putting that toward a good VW trans? I really wanna do this trans swap though!Steve Arndt wrote:All the 901 / 2 five speeds with 912 gearing I've scrounged up were from 1968 model years.

When Porsche first designed a synchronized gearbox in the early 50s, they came up with their own design then patented it. When VW went to synchros, they went with the more common Borg Warner type. The VW B-W type work way better than the Porsche type. The problem is, Porsche wouldn't give up on the crappy design. So if your 66 912 gearbox is a 4 speed, it will have no advantage over a VW 4 speed, and it will not shift as well.
Porsche hung onto their crappy synchros all the way up to the late 80s before finally adopting the superior B-W type.

I wouldn't even consider doing a 4 speed swap. Only reason I even thought about it was for the 5 speed but if this car isn't a 5 then I'll just part it out for whatever is good on it. Won't be a whole lot though since it's rotted in half. We'll see what happens when I get it. Thanks for all the information. Very helpful.

Re: 66 Porche 912 5 speed in a 70 type 1 pan?
I believe Originally all 911 and 912 were 5 speed, the 4 speed was an option mainly aimed at the american market as the dog leg first was unpopular. On the 5 speed the 1st gear is positioned in the nose cone so on the 4 speed there are no gears in the nose cone, so removing the nose cone will tell you if its a 4 speed or 5 speed.
One thing to note is that the over all 4th gear ratio on the 4 speed box is the same ratio as the over all 5th gear ratio on the 5 speed box. So you will not benifit from a better cruising speed if you have a 5 speed box. The 5 speed box just has closes gears.
