Check out this link:

also try a search.
I have looked into this myself,
I have a spare 002 bus trans found in a bush. It looks very doable because the mounting holes in the 002 are very close to the 004 mounting holes on top of the bellhousing. Some welding and drilling of the stock mount should be all that is needed.
one would either need to find a side shift trans and use a cable shifter, or notch out the body right above the rear frame where the shift rod goes through. I believe that this would result in a cutout under the rear seat, which should not be too much of a problem as one could just weld a small "box" over top of the rod that allows clearence. Then 2 universal joints and a foot long extension could couple the stock shift rod to the trans. I am not sure if this setup would really work, but i have seen pictures of similar ones so i dont see why not.
The cv joints are the same bolt pattern, one would just need to get custom length axles made, plenty of off road vw suppliers should be able to do this.
The motor bolts up. A 228mm flywheel may be possible (which i also have).
hydro slave cylinder kits are available and should work with our 19mm bore (i think) clutch master cylinder, however, if not, master cylinders are available in many configurations from the same vendors, complete with a pedal assembly.
There may be other issues but we really do not know what potential problems will become real problems until someone just tries it.
I will be doing this when (if) my current trans breaks.
If i can find my camera charger ill try to get pics up of side by sides as well as mounting possibilities.

Re: bus transmission in a VW 411
The main problem is going to be fabbing the linkage to make it work (as you describe)...and fabbing the rear tail cone mount as its totally backwards from what the type 4 transmission has and there is virtually no room with the rear beam. Ray
