AMC heads???

Post by 51MAN »

Ok... a little more time available and I really need to build this engine...

I have some used AMC heads, seems to be a lot more metal.. no appreciable wear on them, but I have no idea how many miles they have done.. although there is quite a bit of corrosion all around the jacket seal area... now this could be from whatever sealant they used when the engine was put back together.....
I have seen the stories that the AMC valves are poor quality... but is it true? I was going to just get a set of new VW valves unles there are alternatives?
Seats ok??? Just gonna get them 3 angled if so...

I'll clean up the ports, nothing major...

One issue I have though.. there are some small "nicks" in the head seal area in a couple of spots... not from me removing the seals... am I going to have to machine them to get rid of it? or can I use an old barrel and lap them with grinding paste??

You need to get them bead blasted and weld up the damaged areas before machining. The distance between the two different decks need to stay the same. The heads corrode from not using distilled water and G 12 coolant. If you change the coolant once a year the heads will not corrode. The record at my shop for a set of head gaskets was over 300,000 miles.
