So I picked up a serpentine belt system from the guys over in the ORF and the install isn't going well. The pulley's need to be aligned within 1mm. I got 10mm.



The crank pulley is seated all the way in:


The generator pulley is even offset more than the stock pulley:

I called the manufacturer and they said I need to pull the generator and fan shroud back the 10mm to get the pulley's into alignment. There isn't 10mm of slop to do that.

The only thing I can think of is that the generator itself may be too short. The generator case is 16cm long.


I also noticed that the bottom opening is covered a little by the stand:


Can someone confirm the generator length? If anyone has installed one of these, let me know if there is a trick to it. It's made by MST.

The stock setup also had the offset issue, but I didn't have any issues so I left it alone.

Does it matter if you flip the top pulley over?

I've got 16cm like your measurement also.
Might try loosening the generator strap & side bolts to push the assembly forward?
Need a washer/spacer behind the top pulley?

I tired pulling the generator back. It doesn't move more than 1mm or so before hitting the back of my carb. I also thought about flipping the generator pulley over. It lines up, but looks bad. It exposes the front of the generator to the elements.



The generator stud isn't long enough to add a 10mm spacer.

Here's what the manufacturer said:

Yes…The Kit is universal for both an alternator and a generator. If you have an alignment problem, it is relative to how the generator/alternator is mounted to the stand. It you are this far off, then you are having the same alignment issue with your standard pulleys and are making up the difference with shims.

Solution:
You need to loosen the alternator/generator from the stand and shift the entire upper housing and squirrel cage forward to gain the alignment. This should be done regardless to ensure proper operation of the motor/cage and belt system. Once you have tilted and shifted the upper assembly forward, re-tighten and verify that you do not have any noise coming from the squirrel cage and the housing.

This will work! And it is the only correct way to line up the pulley system, stock or otherwise. DO NOT run the pulley installed backwards as indicated in your picture! The system is not designed to run that way and may cause damage.

Please remember, this is an aftermarket kit installation. We have done extensive research and development on this product to ensure proper operation. It is designed to run on a motor that has been properly built and installed. If done correctly, you will enjoy many, many miles of hassle free performance from this setup.

Thanks for measuring your generator, that eliminates one question.

You should be able to get the generator pulled 10cm forward...you might have to loosen the 2 side bolts and the cooling tin screws, along with the generator strap and maybe the carb to get it??

Found the problem. My fan shroud was bent. It was bowed in. I jumped on it until it was straight. The pulleys lined up.
