Painted Trim (factory) - 80s Cal Look

Post by MNAirHead »

Class11 and I are doing basically the same car.

I've been thinking of doing the entire car in gloss black painted flat black trim.

I'm aware Mexican bugs are done this way... this is a 60s shell cal look ragtop.

Reason to paint the trim is to keep the budget reasonable.. I'm thinking everything .. window pillars and all... right down to the ragtop mechanism.

Any comments, experience, pix or suggestions?

3M had a urethane bumper black. Its laid out nice and smooth. You may wanna grab a can of it and try it on a test piece. Its flexible and sticks well, we sprayed many a cheapo bumper cover with it. You might try hitting the piece with a scotch-brite pad 1st, before you coat it. I can't wait to see these cars you guys are doing.....

The trim on a bug is aluminum - is this flex stuff necessary?

No probably not, but I think that it says a lot for the fact that you can spary bumper covers with the stuff. Its not quite a semi gloss, but its not "dull" flat either. Marhyde also has their version and it maybe cheaper, but I perfer the 3m

You can use any spary epoxy enamel after roughing andcleaning thesurface. Its flexible enough for trim and bumpers. Lasts for years, comes in Flat semi and gloss. Looks like powder coat if you build it up. Ray

duplicolor has an adhesion promoter for aluminum. i use it before i paint the little aluminum switch screws on the dash. it says you can do trim but i have not tried it to know how durable it is. http://www.duplicolor.com/products/adhesion.html

Thanks..

For simplicity sake, I'm leaning toward blacked out trim etc.. I'll try a few pieces before making a final decision.
