Hey guys i have been over here for a while here but never really started a thread devoted to my first car.i have worked for my ride and my parents where willing to match up to 3k of the saved up money from odd end jobs and such for my first car which was a sweet deal. i have a thread over on the samba but i tend to like the atmosphere's over here a little bit more i dont know there both great sights and i dont wanna get in any fights lol anyways i bought the car from a guy up in river side who bought the car from a guy in Arizona and thats as far of the history of the car as i know but i believe its been in dry environments because the body is almost rust free. the car is my daily driver to school and back every day and it has been very reliable first car. the po or the po before him did most of the grunt work of changing it into a baja bug and did a top quality job with the cage etc etc. my dad and i have been what i call making the car mine and doing the fun work on the car such as stereos chrome etc etc. some general information on the bug if your where wondering are that its a 1915 with a Webber 44 carb a 22 gallon fuel cell disk breaks on all four corners new electronic ignition (installed just a week ago lol ) with an 009 distributer dual stage remote oil cooler and oil filter the list is endless... anyways here are a few pics of the day i brought it home....

up graded the alternator to a internal regulated one and added a chrome alternator stand and filler cap



i put a new exhaust system to quit her up for street driving



re did the entire dash and added an auto meter tach and new led switched

i added some hella 500 lights to the front bumper for looks and for some extra light on night rides



i took the car out to gordens's well sand dunes the last week end for the cars first real desert trip it was a blast and the car ran great. the only down side of the desert trip was it rained over night and i dident bring any covers go figure right the one night im there haha anyways it was a lot of fun and here a couple of pics from the trip...

anyways thanks for checking out my baby it has been a great first car and looking to learning much more abuot the ACVW . my plans for the car is hopefulley one day turbo charge it and then from there who knows?? if you have any questions comments etc i will answer them as soon as posabe and thanks to all for the great information on this site

Baja Kid, good to see you over here, nice Baja you have looks like a load of time and effort put into it and it shows, well done! What would you change if you where doing it knowing what you know now?

thanks alot for the complement i like your question and well there would be a few things like changing some of the gear ratios in the trans axle because it dose not seam to rev up very fast in the sand and seems to bog down alot but on the street and hard pack it does great. my dad tells me from experience from owing many vws in his past that the trans axel can make a world of difference in a vw and i might take it out and have it reworked. other then that not very much i love the thing to death haha and of course in my dreams coil overs and suspension work but that can be very costly. thanks again

will do probably will post them tomorrow for ya. thats one of the best thing that i liked about my car when i bought it was the rear fenders there made out of a tube base that bolts on to the stock holes then there is sheet metal riveted on. it looks really trick and i dont have to worry about breaking them or any rocks hitting them cracking etc. they also make good place to set your favoret beverage when working on the motor haha dual purpose lol

well i have one, its just setup diffrent than yours. I wanted to check yours out...maybe change mine around abit.

and i also have a question about valve cover gaskets. the last time i adjusted my valves i didn't replace my gaskets and after i got home from my trip from the desert last weekend i noticed that i was leaking a fair amount of oil from the top and bottom from my vale covers and i was wondering if i am so posed to replace them every time i adjust the valves.i assume that if i do replace it it will stop the leaking right. thxs

how many gallons of gas does that tank hold. it looks pretty good though. i like how it kinda just fits in there and it isnt in the way of anything. Where do you have your battery mounted?

Its a pretty good looking ride. How much of the work did you do yourself?

its a 22 gallon tank and its flush with the luggage area where my speakers are so it works great for a place to store stuff haha. my car dosent have a trunk and there is not very much room in the interior so every bit counts. do u have pics of your tank in your profile i would like to check it out. the battery is mounted under the passenger seat.thanks for the complement on the car too. the po did most of the grunt work transforming it into a baja bug but my dad and i have also done a lot of the work really making it mine.

Yes, if you are using cork gaskets "I" like to change them each valve adjustment, they are cheap.

I have switched over to a rubber type gasket and I use them several times, well infact, I have not changed them since switching on the buggy....

I believe you are correct, if you did chase the leaking to the valve covers, then yes change the gaskets and it should stop, a little unusual for them to leak at the TOP.
