Voltage regulators, relays and solenoids oh my

Here is my minor issue that this noob can't figure out.

ISSUE: Car won't turn. I have sufficient juice IE battery fully
charged. I have lights and when i turn key, i get a click. The
click used to be solely from under the Rear Right (driver) side,
but the engine won't turn.

Tried to hot wire solenoid w/no success. I knocked the solenoid with
with a hammer, no luck. Changed gear to 3rd rolled the car backwards..no
luck.

Got a new starter motor and solenoid...still no luck but i know have
a click from starter :) though engine still not turning over.

I am looking at relays and wiring...here's my set up and enjoy my pictures.
:PAUSE:
Ok, ok, don't laugh too hard, i've been at this one for a few nights now and haven't a clue where to look to figure out WTF these two items are. I've used 3 books, several sites (including this one with search option)and am either a complete noob (ok we know i am but hey i'm trying here) or i'm missing it. I :continue:

This is below my rear passenger seat~

When i went to a local shop and described the box noted by the
Arrow ? on the left hand side I was told this is a headlight relay
to control high beams. Is this correct? I didn't see this on my diagrams and one mechanic said he's never seen one there.

Here is the other relay in question ~

The photo for this wasn't that great so i created it in a diff prog. It's a small 2 inch black box with 3 prongs.

I assume this other is a RELAY, same set up mentioned in (http://laudeman.com/bug_solenoid.html ) is the item labeled Relay below or relay #2 in my first diagram. Is this correct and if so, how can i check to see if the relay is good / working?

I am a bit confused by your description. I don't understand why you tried to roll the car backwards in third gear. Does the engine turn over by hand?

I read somewhere, I think it was the Muirs book the idiot guide that if you have the car in 3rd gear and roll it backwards it will move the solenoid off the bad contact spot to a decent area.

I also forgot to mention that when i got the new starter in and I jumped it with a screw driver, the engine runs. I just can't get the key to turn it over. Which is why I assume it's one of the relays or wires. Is there a way to test the path or the relays? I'm still trying to figure those relays out, if i find the answer i'll post what I find, but any help would be awesome.

This is the best I could do. The ignition switch supplies power directly to the solenoid so you either have a bad connection or a defective switch unless someone altered the wiring.

that's what i'm thinking. I found the diagrams earlier and am checking the whole layout again.

Two questions still though, is there a way to test the relay and is the wire off the Voltage Regulator #10? It seemed like it was 8?

Thanks for the help David.

Thanks for the help, the schems helped a lot. I noobed and didn't use the search correctly and found those browsing the actual site. Guess i got ahead of myself when the search pulled up a crap load of stuff not related. I figured it out.

Issue was the relay. I ended up bypassing it and just used the ignition switch. I plan to get another relay on there but wanted to know if there was one better than another or which to ask for. I can continue searching if it's here, I don't mind. Best i've seen though, has been a "horn" relay for a VW local mechanic said this, other was a Ford Relay 12v, only issue i've seen finding it is that there are a lot. Is there something more specific; I can ask for?

Thanks for all the help, finally learning the ways of the Vdub.

Cheers

~Ryan

I'm sure you've bench tested or "hot wired" the starer to isolate if the starter is the culprit.
