Hi Everyone,
My name is Jim. I'm from north central Florida. I've been a visitor to this web site for quite a few years and have gained alot of knowledge from reading up, so I've just decided to join in.
I have a 56 Bug which I bought back in 68 while in college and was a daily driver up into the 80s when it was put up on blocks in the garage for the day I could restore it. And it still waits. It is all original with the original engine and trans. Even the original seat uphoulstery which has been stiched back together countless times.
I also have a 412 wagon which I bought new in 73 when my wife and I started a family. I've put 250,000 miles on it (the car that is) driving all over the country. I never could figure out why some people thought they were ugly. I thought it was beautiful. I always got favorable comments from people I met, and almost everyone who rode in it commented on how comfortable and roomy it was and how smooth and quiet it was on the road (compared to the cars of the day). In fact I've never met anyone in person who thought 411s and 412s were ugly. (I think that could be a mith)
Since I new quite a bit from tinkering with my bug, I decided to do all the maintanance and upkeep on the 412 myself including an engine and auto transmission overhaul at 150,000 mi. I've always believed that if you set out to do a job right, that you can do anything anyone else can do. I also believe in; If it ain't broke, just ignore it for a while and it will be.
I've had just about every part of this car apart. I look foreward to sharing my experiences with you.

Jim,

Welcome to STF! I think you will fit right in here. I also was going to college in '68 and I've got a "57 stocker now. Wish I'd had a 412.

I always thought they were ugly  , until I ran into some folks like you who opened my eyes to the real beauty of the cars - roomy, great driveability, wondeful durabilty. Now I'm putting a T4 into a '63 T1 to get some of those characteristics you're talking about.

Hope you enjoy the forums.
