Happy 4.12 day

Post by func412 »

In Finland we are used to the dd.mm.yyyy -style time display.. so this is the day of 412 (4.12).

I did manage to buy a present for my 412 today, new oil spray jets under pistons for new engine . (Don´t tell anyone those are originally made for Fiat).

How do those install? I have some I made that look similar but are longer. Mine are made from 10mm grade 10.9 bolts drilled through from the top and screw into the case from above and to the rear of each rod. This way their position is indexed and they can be removed for cleaning. They are fed by an external oil ring tube. They have two precison orifcies screwed into the ends. One for piston and on for the lifter pair. They were a b*tch to aim right. I bought the orifices from mcmaster carr of all places. They are pre-drilled and are about$2 each. This was I do not take oil pressure from the mains. They worked well in my test rig.
Cool gift for 4-12 day. Ray

It was good party, no hangover. Yet.

Ray,

I´m going to steal oil from mains. Do you think that is not good solution in type 4? I´ve seen it done succesfully in type 1 and WBX.

I´m going to make a hole to crankcase from main bearings under the pistons and install these into the holes. I`ll leave smaller hole to piston side, that only the tip goes through. Maybe use some glue to make it stay in place. I need to make a hole to bearing for oil to get into the oil jet hole.

I suppose 30 mm oil pump will be enough to feed these, when original oil filter lines are made larger and to flow better.

I don't have a problem with stealing oil from the mains....if you are sure that in hot weather and possible thin oil situations that you have more than enough oil pressure to go around.
With the stock pump and no full flow work.....in the kind of hot weather we get in Texas.....I am not 100% sure. Others may have experience that will help. With full flow oiling and the type 1 Schadeck pump....I think it would be absolutely no problem.
My issue with having oiling jets inside of the case is that they are out of sight and unservicable.
Though I am very scrupulous with oil change and cleanliness...all it takes is a fleck of metal to clog one of these jets. Your orifice sizes will be .010" or smaller. I have had this happen on the cam oiling jets on my rabbit convertible.
So I thought about how to make them external and reach inside to where they need to be. This way they can be serviced....re-aimed or indexed or even change orifice sizes. Also just as a bonus they do not take any oil from the mains.

I think oiling jets of any kind are a great idea. Ray

Ok, so now everyone knows! Thanks a lot, dude!

What comes to oiling... I´m still a little bit worried does the original oil filter adaptation resist oil flow too much even if the lines are drilled a bit bigger. If I remember right, I've seen here in STF that original oil filter is making poor oil flow issues and bad crankshaft oiling in performance engine. The filter lines are working good enough only with original oil pump size and original RPM:s.

It´s just a guesswork, but this far I´ve assumed that increasing the diameter of original oil filter adaption lines help enough oil flow to this setup with 30mm oil pump.

If I figure out how to pass the original oil filtration in 412 to get better results for oil flow, I might do that just to be more confident. I haven't looked at the engine when mounted in place from that point of view. I supose the rear hanger bar and the fan housing might resist this idea.
