FAQ - Metal Rear Fenders (front flipped back)

Hammer (and all)...

You did the metal front fenders (flipped and trimmed to mount to the rear)

QUESTIONS
Any pointers?

Did you need both sets (one for templating the other for final cut)?

What did you do for the new trim edge?

I used Super Beetle fronts flipped for the rears. The driver front goes on the passenger rear and so on. I used my F/G rears as a template so I only needed one set. They say standard beetle fronts line up when flipped to the rear, the Supers don’t have quite as tight of a bend radius to them. For the supers I had to cut little triangles out of the flange and massage the arc into them. I also mounted mine high on the body so they didn’t need to line up exactly. I cut them with a good set of hand held shears. I filed along the edges and used 80 grit paper as well.

No, but I can tonight and post them. By “firewall cut”, do you mean where the back of the car is cut off? The firewall isn’t cut on my car.

I'm interested in knowing the challenges of using a Super vs standards..

Standards bolt straight on.. Shawn may have just discovered a new use for fatchick fenders.

Let me see if I can explain this…After you flip the fenders to the rear, start bolting them on at the bottom by the door. If you look at the side picture and draw a line straight down from the back edge of the rear window about 3/4s of the way up the fender is where I had to cut triangles in the flange to allow me to form the bend. The Standard fenders have a tighter bend radius.

Keep in mind I mounted mine high on the body so if you mount them in the standard location you may have to start the tighter bend sooner.

Hopefully that makes sense. It makes sense to me, but I was there.
