What is the purpose of the round part in the back? Is it necessary? Its circled in red.

Starting to feel like a midget, cut and paste cut and paste.

oh no....i havent made mine yet. i was just wondering. there are aot of guys on here that have made them. do a search for Body Lift. there are some good discussions about it.

how are these vs the ones you buy from different parts houses?

I have a few of the $200 magazine lifts.. they're NOTHING like this... tin c channel

these are way better. it is solid tubing, the ones that you buy are a "C" style channel. and after time the top and bottom start to close in on each other. and then you have to weld a plate on them to fix it. so you might as well build your own. plus you can make it any size you want.

so in other words probably not worth the $200 unless you need a pattern to work from.

yea i guess. but you might find a used one. i see them every now and again. but you culd buy it make a pattern and then sell it. and then send me a copy of the pattern

If doing it over... I'd watch the for sale threads... then buy a used rusty one... have them throw out the sides and only send the front & back...

I've bought used lifts ~$50...

lol Im not so hot with the fabbing.Im going to have to learn because Im seriously wanting a nice rack as well.And It seems that no one makes a nice one for a bug.I think someone could make some money starting to fab up high quality custom vw parts.

I suppose there are simpler ways to leave access to the shift coupler, but I thought it would look good to follow the original contour. And it seemed to be the “no short cut” way to do things, and I like to go that route when I can. And in this case it wasn’t a mater of more money, just more effort. But don’t think I’m above a few short cuts, just look at my tranny mount in the other thread, in that case it is a matter of money (not ready to drop $600 on a tubing bender yet), and for now this project is on the down low budget.

And my lift is tin C-channel , well not really tin, but 16ga cold rolled steel. I didn’t like the idea of through bolts and wanted to use welded in nuts so channel was the best way, and like I mentioned in the other thread I will end up boxing in some sections to stiffen things up. For a lighter glass buggy I think it will be fine, for some thing with more body weight on it like a Baja the rec tube might be best.
