I`ve heard that dropped spindles are made from two pairs - cut and welded, but how?
You see I have three pairs of 71-> spindles lying around, so if something goes wrong I still have a std pair to use...

I don't see a reason to use four, if you wanna make drops and can make some good welding, you can use just one pair.

But how is it done the "right way"?
Do I just chop off the axle from its base and weld it back a bit higher? No way...

That's right, don't just cut the axle of. You should cut of the spindle axle with the goods left on both sides, like a T. On the upper part you remove goods, as much as you want to lower the spindle (actually raise...). And on the lower part you add. That's maybe a reason for using another pair of spindles (to get as few welds as possible) but it still sound like an overkill to me.
You better be good with the welding machine. If you now someone with a mill and a lathe it's probably easier to produce a new pair instead.

I suppose you cant do it "the flipped" way on a bay. (Did I remeber to mention my ride is a `69 bay crewcab?).
