Okay got my adjustable pushrod out to measure and they look almost exactly the same as stock??? Is there some difference between T1 and T4 pushrod ends that would somehow explain this?

Doh

Threw some shims from a set of T1 rockers I had laying around and bam. Perfect. (Or near enough, I can’t tell a difference between this and with the adjustable pushrod.)

Type 4's are a narrower engine than the type 1 , so the pushrods are shorter .

Motor is together! Apparently 22ga sheet metal is .027" which is darn near .030" for shims so got everything buttoned up, valves adjusted. Just needs oil and ready to fire.
I need to order some 36mm hose since the hose shop in town was closed today, and need an air filter but that should show up in a week or two.
Anyways here is the engine in my little tiny garage with the car moved back in so no more room to work :o Geez it's a mess, but once the motor is in the car I'll have room to put everything away...

Nah the 914 has a 2.0 with stock D-Jet, runs fantastic :D This one is going into my Squareback. Though it did come out of another 914 before I picked it up.

Okay guys, I've been slacking. Getting back to work though. With the T3 invasion being canceled I slowed down and wasn't working on it every free hour I had but just gotta finish up the exhaust and it's good to go. A couple photos of getting some of the stub pipes tig welded. I don't think this is going to be a permanent exhaust, not going to be equal length, and it's running with a Monza 914 exhaust so none of it is ideal. Down the road someday I'll probably put together a complete stainless header system, maybe... or some T4 heaters, who knows. See how this thing runs with this setup first.

A bit of progress on the exhaust. Got to bring it to work to TIG weld. Can't mock it up at work since the motors not there, and can't weld it at home since I only have a MIG machine there.

Also welcomed to the family a 2.0 shortblock. I'll be pulling the crank and rods from it and selling the bus case, since I've got a 411 case in the garage already. Got it for a penny and a song so I couldn't pass it up, woulda been nice to find it before I finished the 1.7 but I'll take what I can get.

header pipes are looking good . If you're planning on keeping your 914 and VW 's for a long time , I would just hang onto the case . It's one of the things that you can only get second hand and good cases that haven't been tunnel bored will get rare . As far as I'm aware you can't get main bearing for anything over first over size main bearings .

Motor is in! No first start quite yet, have to finish chopping up the old Monza and get the O2 bung welded in. Only took one crappy picture cause I was busy.

We've got a running car! I'll try to get a couple more photos showing what I did for the exhaust and how everything fits over the weekend. Did cam break-in last night and did some test driving today. I think I may have a vacuum leak somewhere, having a hard time getting a steady idle or even an idle below 1k rpm... But it moved under it's own power and ran good enough to get autotune going on a quick jaunt around town for a few minutes. Definitely needs tuning though.

To start, very nice project and complete witte down :D! Also good to hear that the engine is running good after the rebuild. If ilI remember correctly, my 2l did like to run a bit leaner towards idle.

May I ask you where you based the timing tabel on?

Thanks en enjoy!
