4 door baja

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Do you have the front beam for the "Thing"? They are hard to find and expensive. I have the arms and stuff and they alone are worth $$$$$.

The lower BJ install differently than the stock bug beam and the upper adjuster for the angle is VERY hard to find from what I was told when I stumbled onto the setup I have.

The bug lower BJ is pressed in from the top with the BJ facing up. Hitting the suspension hard can cause the BJ to be pulled out of the lower arm. The Thing lower BJ is also pressed in from the upper side of the arm but the BJ connector faces down and the spindle is shaped longer.

The thing spindle.

Good luck finding and working on them

So I got a little side tracked. I found a Thing

Whoof! What are you going to do with this, restore it or off-road it? It is pretty cool and would look good off-roading but I am not sure on the construction of them.

If the Thing "pan" designed similar to the "bugs" then there are things I would do if you were going to work it hard. The front beam would probably need some added stuff for hard support and (obviously) a cage would need some additional consideration. I would do the truss bar differently as the commercial units are not really strong enough based on what I am now seeing and hearing riders doing now days.

I will follow this build for sure.

You have the 4 door "B-waha" forum, but maybe a "What's that Thing" forum for anyone else who can find one to build. They are not the easiest VW "Thing" to find (pun intended) but any info on it's rebuild or mods may help someone down the line.

I just did a search to see if there was a Thing for sale and found one here in western WA for $23,000. It looks pretty good

Lee,
I will be starting a new thread for the Thing. I'm building it for off road. It took me over 10 years to find a "Cheap" one . i bought the shell for $900 with pan and spent another $900 peacing windshied frame missing door . hinges hard ware and the hard top and side curtains. I wish i had the front beam.
My plan is v6 honda and A Arms. I spent the last 10 years buying parts for a car i didn't have yet. :D

I

Hmmmm! I think I've got all the pieces to turn a stock bug beam into a Thing beam, but I am not sure I want to get rid of the parts though. The price for the parts now days is big based on a look into it a while back. The upper adjusters are the hardest and most expensive based on my last check.

This is a look for the front beam parts et.al..

Being as old as I am I might put a name on the stuff and give it to the family and how to contact you. I still work on the Model T looking dune buggy periodically. Let me think about it but it won't be right away based on the Dr. meeting today. I've already lived longer than they thought after my 2 heart attacks in 1986, then triple bi-pass surgery in January 1990.
