OFF-Roaders Rides

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Ditch the power pulley.

It's not worth slowing your fan speed and charging system down 25-30% for the little horsepower gain it gives you.

Anzan, looks like you've got a skidplate that works with heater boxes. Where'd you get it? And if you don't mind, how much? I need one.

Nuke, I wish I could help! The guy who built my cage 20 + years ago made it for me about 4 years ago. Sad news is he died 2 years ago. He was a real artist and 'offroading' lost a really good fab man. He was known as Dune Buggy Dave Dunbar. :(

on edit: we could always use it for a template and have one made. Mine's aluminum.

Nothing too special as far as specs go. But it is special to me. It's my first baja, and I've wanted one for over 20 years! Started out as a 72 standard that I traded an old 83 chevy c10 for. The right side was put into a ditch by a kid, so the fenders had some dents in them. The engine ran, but I didn't know the history of it. I had a 72 superbeetle that I knew the engine was good on, so I swapped them.

It has a 1600 dp in it with a H30/31 carb on it. I bought the narrow eye kit for $50 and put the rear fenders on it for $30. The rack was from a friend for $20, but I haven't paid him yet. It is mounted on a thule rack which the junk yard had for $15. The rims started as white spoke rims, 15x5" and the tires are BFG Long Trail p205/70r15's. I had 235/75r15's on the rear, but at 7,000 feet, the altitude really sapped the power. So, I am running the smaller tires.

The interior still needs done. I shot the whole outside with a tan primer, including the trim pieces. I like the military look, so I shot the rims with black satin paint. This weekend I hope to shoot the exterior again with tan, but with an enamyl in satin. I have some nerf bars to add, but will do it after the exterior is painted. I still need a rear cage.

The purpose of my ride is to fullfill a "want" I've had since a teenager. My dad had an offroad Thing that I learned to drive on. Boy I wish he still had that!

What's the specs on those front tires?

Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.
